Professor Charles W. W. Ng is the Vice-President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in Guangzhou campus. He is also the Dean of HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School, CLP Holdings Professor of Sustainability and a Chair Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST. Professor Ng is Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and immediate Past President of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (2017 – 2022).
Professor Ng has supervised more than 70 PhD and 60 MPhil students to graduation and has published some 400 SCI journal articles and 250 conference papers and delivered more than 100 keynotes and state-of-the-art reports across the six continents.
He has received many awards including the 2022 Varnes Medal from the International Consortium of Landslides, the 2017 Telford Premium Prize from the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the R. M. Quigley Award from the Canadian Geotechnical Society three times for his three best papers published in 2007, 2012 & 2016. In China, he received the prestigious 2022 HLHL Scientific and Technological Advancement Award Progress (何梁何利基金科學與技術進步獎). He was also a recipient of the 2020 National Natural Science Award(中國國家2020年度自然科學獎), the 2015 Scientific Technological Advancement Award (中國國家2015年度科技進步獎) by the State Council of China.
Ir Wong is widely respected in the industry and has been a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers since 1993. He is enlisted as Authorized Person, Registered Structural Engineer and Registered Geotechnical Engineer under the Buildings Ordinance. He was also recently appointed as Professor-level Senior Engineer in Geotechnical Discipline in mainland China.
With over 40 years of experience as a Civil, Structural, and Geotechnical Engineer, Ir Wong has accumulated a wealth of expertise through involvement in diverse projects in both private and public sectors. He is recognized for his ability to devise innovative engineering solutions tailored to address specific underground conditions and meet clients' requirements. One of his recent accomplishments is the successful completion of the Henderson, an iconic building in Central, which included the excavation of 5 levels of basement in close proximity to several railway tunnels. Additionally, he has been entrusted with conducting independent investigations into the significant structural and foundation incidents in the past years.
His contributions extend beyond the development project work. Ir Wong has also actively participated in the Government Landslip Preventive Measures Programme since the 1970s. He continues to act as Project Director, providing consulting services to various government departments on safety screening of private slopes, upgrading of government man-made slopes, carrying out natural terrain hazard studies and implementing mitigation measures for hillside catchments under the Landslip Prevention and Mitigation Programme.
Ir Wong's commitment to knowledge sharing is evident through his co-authorship of over ten technical papers. He remains deeply engaged in the engineering community in Hong Kong, serving on various boards and committees of the HKSAR government, academic institutions and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed as a Justice of Peace in 2001.
